Why perform clinical trials?Clinical trials are designed to answer specific health questions prior to the marketing of a medicine. The investigated medicines can be both new medicines and known medicines that are already on the market.
Clinical trials will be carried out for various reasons. One reason can be to compare an already existing treatment with a new medicine in order to determine which one is the best. In other cases the clinical trials are investigating a known medicine which is already on the market, to test different ways to make the treatment more effective, easier to use or reduce side effects. Occasionally, clinical trials are conducted to learn how to use the treatment best in another population, in whom the treatment has not previously been tested.
